Phat Interview #01: Noisia
Thijs from Noisia who will be playing at Phat 09's pre party on the 30th of December answers a couple of questions:
How many times have you visited New Zealand and what do you think of the crowds here (or what have you heard if you haven't been here before)?
I've been to NZ once, about a year ago and i loved it! I'm quite sad that again i can't stay around after playing my show. The shows i played there last year (were it four? that week is a haze of 3 or 4 shows, 2 24-hour flights and too much alcohol) had absolutely great crowds, i wouldn't mind playing for such crowds every time :)
What's one of the first D&B tracks you heard that inspired you?
stakka&skynet-clockwork
What music do you you listen to to relax to?
the beatles - selections from their later lp's, i don't really like their blues and love-songs as much as the weirder stuff they did later
mompou - musica callada (i'd be pleasantly surprised if anyone knew that)
debussy - preludes
chopin - nocturnes
What's your favourite food to cook?
when you're in the studio as much as we have been lately, food is something you want to get out of the way quickly. so besides boiling an egg every morning i don't get to cookin much these days. i used to love to make a simple pasta with sliced steak in strong red-wine sauce and a simple italian salad on the side.
Touring the world must have its drawbacks, what's the worst airport experience you've had?
being held in some weird, grey, TL-lit room in Tokyo airport for 5 hours is the first thing that comes to mind. it was over some visa issues i had no idea of. in the end i got through, but i had already prepared myself to step right back on the plane, to have made a16 hour-flight for nothing, and to miss 2 shows my first and probably last chance to see a little bit of japan. i'm really glad i didn't have to miss that!
What has been one of the most enjoyable tracks that you have produced?
nice question!
there are a few tracks in which everything just fell together randomly and you're almost watching yourselves writing this tune, amazed that every little thing you try just really works. it was bordering on the freaky when we were writing time stops with teebee, i was really a bit scared by how many random actions worked out so perfectly.
another nice one was strange owl experiment. i had been walking around with an idea for a dnb track in my head where the drums and bass were to be a traditional rhythm section, never changing, just providing a framework for the actual music. i wrote the whole 128-bar chord progression coming down off a mushroom trip, and again, every thing i tried just worked.
What plans does Noisia have for 2009?
Noisia's 2009 will be all about the album we're putting the finishing touches to right now.
At Phat 09, you'll be performing in a valley in the middle of a native rainforest, where's the most remote location you've performed at?
I once played in a little forest next to a river on a ranch out in cow country, canada. it was a great location (except for the mosquitos) but when a lightning storm broke out, i found myself playing in a thick black rubber raincoat, standing in a pool of water amidst all kinds of electrical equipment also covered in rain, wiping the water off the decks, looking at the tracklistings of my cd's under the booth so the rain wouldn't wipe the ink away.. and even though both sound and lights failed a few ties and the dancefloor was a puddle of mud after 5 minutes, me and the few people left dancing had a really good time :D
What can the crowd at Phat 09 expect from your set on the 30th of December, 2008?
Expect to hear most of our forthcoming album and more sonic brain-cholera.
Thank you very much and we're really looking forward to having you at Phat 09!!!
I'm looking forward to it too!
